EXERCISE PRODUCES THE FOLLOWING NEUROTRANSMITTERS/“FEEL-GOOD” CHEMICALS:
Endorphins – a group of hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system that are designed to decrease the feeling of pain.
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) – a Protein found in the brain and spinal cord that supports the survival of existing neurons and encourages the growth of new neurons and synapses. Since dependency on opioids as the opposite effect on the body, exercise can assist in reversing this effect by producing more of these proteins.
Serotonin – is a natural mood stabilizer. It is the chemical that helps with sleeping eating and digesting.
Dopamine – is the neurotransmitter of pleasure and acts as a messenger between brain cells. It is also known for activating the “reward circuits” of the brain. When we do things that our body values as beneficial, dopamine is released and we get a sense of pleasure.
